New wind turbine control and protection product family is exhibited
Beijing, October 21, 2011 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group launched its turbine control and protection product family for wind power systems at the China Wind Power 2011 Conference and Exhibition. ABB also showcased its full range of solutions and products for the wind power industry, covering the wind power generation industry from wind turbine product supply to grid connection, thereby exhibiting ABB’s technical strength as the leading wind turbine components independent supplier in the industry.
Jari Tukia, head of ABB Wind ISI North Asia & China, commented, "With 30 years of experience and a thorough understanding of both wind turbine drivetrain and grid connection design, ABB serves wind power customers at every stage of the process. Furthermore, ABB is committed to be close to customers and the market, and to come up with more custom-made products and solutions by combining its advanced technologies and local customer’s experiences. Various solutions are being showcased at this event to address our customers’ challenges and to strengthen the leading position of ABB in the wind power market.”
ABB exhibited its entire product family for turbine control and protection systems for wind power systems. The solution uses AC500, the reliable, flexible and upgradable PLC from ABB as the controller, and is able to be customized for wind power equipment with varying capacities. The ABB PLC AC500-XC which is designed for extreme indoor and outdoor conditions also appeared at the booth. With extended immunity to hazardous gases and salt mist, it can be used at temperatures of -30℃ up to +70℃ and at altitude of up to 4,000m above sea level.
As most wind farms are situated in remote areas with harsh natural conditions, they place higher requirements on equipment in terms of compactness, safety and reliability than normal. ABB showcased many products and solutions specifically designed for the wind power industry at the exhibition. For instance, ABB’s Slender power distribution transformers, featuring fully sealed structure and high vibration resistance, are designed to be installed in narrow spaces like inside a compact substation or inside the tower; ABB’s PCS 6000 is an original medium voltage inverter solution for offshore wind power generation; ABB’s low-voltage product line, including circuit breakers and contactors, have been widely used in the main circuit and control circuit of wind turbines. The ABB Full Power converters and Doubly Fed converters, along with the Doubly Fed and Permanent Magnet generators which can be used in current mainstream wind turbines were exhibited as well.
Lightning is a threat faced by wind farms. ABB’s special surge protection solution and the low-voltage protection and circuit breaking solution which combines circuit breakers and contactors were also exhibited. They were developed to cope with lightning strikes during turbine operation, and to minimize power grid disturbance and circuit breakdowns during regular turbine operation. These solutions can effectively protect all equipment in the electric drivetrain system, including generators, inverters, contactors and circuit breakers, to ensure they operate regularly and maximize power generation throughout the entire service life of the wind turbines.
The China Wind Power Conference and Exhibition is sponsored by the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA), the Chinese Wind Energy Association (CWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and is one of the most important global wind energy exhibitions. ABB has been an exhibitor at the exhibition for four consecutive years since the exhibition was first held in Beijing in 2008.
