ABB takes measures to support talent cultivation in China

For 12 consecutive years to fund underprivileged college students to finish studies through “ABB-New Great Wall Fund”;
Contributes to China’s talent cultivation through donations, joint labs, scientific research projects and innovation competitions

At the eighth “Automation World” event held in Wuhan, ABB, a global power and automation technology group, donated one million yuan to the "ABB-New Great Wall Fund" for the 12th consecutive year. This fund supports underprivileged students majored in engineering and automation to complete their studies at Chinese universities. To date, ABB has contributed a total of 14 million yuan to this fund, benefiting more than 2,000 students from 45 universities across China, such as Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Technology and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) as well as many underprivileged students at technical schools.

Talent is the cornerstone of industrial development. For the past years, ABB has been supporting Chinese university students to finish their studies through “ABB-New Great Wall Fund” and “ABB Jürgen Dormann Foundation for Engineering Education”, and funding local scientific research through ABB Research Award. ABB also set up scholarships or donated lab equipments in HUST, Xiamen University of Technology, Lanzhou University of Technology and other universities. For example, ABB announced in 2015 to donate power and automation equipments worth 1.7 million yuan to Xinjiang University for setting up a new laboratory, and to provide 100,000 yuan as a scholarship annually in the next 5 years, supporting cultivation of local talents.

University-enterprise cooperation is an important way to achieve win-win outcome by boosting technical innovation and fostering talent in line with business need. In China, ABB vigorously promotes its cooperation with universities through a range of measures such as joint research and regular seminars, to develop cutting-edge technologies and innovative talents. In March, 2016, ABB and HUST signed a three-year framework cooperation agreement under which ABB will provide about 1.8 million yuan to support HUST’s scientific research project on topology and hardware in power electronics. Over the past three years, ABB has dedicated over 10 million yuan in cooperation with 20 universities and research institutions on various projects covering topics of development and application of industrial robots, renewable integration, charging of electric vehicles and industrial nanotechnology.

Furthermore, ABB launched industrial contests including ABB Cup national automation thesis contest, ABB University Innovation Contest (UIC) and ABB Robotics Innovation Challenge as platforms to stimulate the innovative thinking of Chinese talent and demonstrate their abilities. For example, over the past four years, more than 5,000 students from over 200 colleges and universities across China have participated in the UIC and nearly 800 papers were submitted.
