ABB wins US$ 17 million in orders in China

Control systems and switchgear contracts for Jiaxing II thermal power plant

Zurich, Switzerland, February 15, 2002 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today that it has received two separate orders for a combined value of US$ 17 million, to supply switchgear and control systems for the Jiaxing Phase II power station, a 2,400-megawatt coal-fired power station under construction in the southeast Chinese coastal province of Zhejiang.

The switchgear contract, worth US$ 11 million, was signed with Zhejiang Provincial Electric Power Equipment & Materials Supply Company for plant owner Zhejiang Jiahua Electric Power Company, and is for the design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of a 500kV Power IT gas insulated switchgear type ELK-3 with nine circuit breaker bays. The installation will be part of the system that will transmit electricity from the 4 x 600-megawatt coal-fired power station to the East China power grid via two 500 kV transmission lines.

The control systems contact, valued at US$ 6 million, was signed with EPC contractor, Zhejiang Electric Construction Corporation on behalf of the plant owner. It covers the design, engineering, supply, and site services of control systems for four Chinese manufactured boilers and plant auxiliaries, as well as the balance-of-plant system based on ABB’s Symphony distributed control system technology. According to the project schedule, the first unit of this power station shall will be ready for commercial operation in early 2004.

These are ABB’s third and fourth recent contracts related to the Jiaxing Phase II power station, and underscore the company’s strong position in the Chinese electric power industry. In September 2001, ABB received a contract for ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd. to supply four groups of 500 kV/720 MVA generator step-up transformers with a total capacity of 2,880 MVA. In June 2002, ABB Xiamen Low Voltage Equipment Co. Ltd. was chosen to supply 538 low voltage switchgear units for Jiaxing Phase II.
