ABB to collaborate with leading institute to support power technology research in Indonesia

ABB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) to develop advanced technologies and undertake joint studies and research, in areas like integration of renewables and the digitalization of power grids to make them smarter. As part of the collaboration, ABB will also provide scholarships to encourage the development of competencies in power technology. ITB is the oldest technology university in Indonesia that traces its roots back to 1920 and is recognized as a leading research institute.

As one of South-East Asia’s fastest growing economies, Indonesia has a growing need for electricity and technologies to transform its power grid, to serve as a backbone of economic progress. The country has plans to add 35 gigawatts (GW) of power generation, with an ambitious target to integrate significant renewable energy sources. Combined with its unique island topography, this calls for innovative technologies and the potential of combining bulk and distributed power supply.


“We are delighted to collaborate with a leading academic institution like ITB to develop relevant technologies that can contribute to the strengthening of Indonesia’s power infrastructure” said Massimo Danieli, Head of ABB’s Grid Automation business, a part of the company’s Power Grids division. “This partnership will also help to nurture technical talent, reinforcing ABB’s commitment to technology and innovation.”

As an example, microgrids can play a key role in providing reliable access to electricity in both grid-connected and off-grid areas and can help harness renewable energy sources. This is a technology of great relevance to an island nation like Indonesia. As a global leader in the field, ABB will encourage the development of the latest microgrid technologies and install demonstration equipment for educational purposes in the ITB campus. The collaboration will also include focus areas like smart grids, power electronics, cyber security, internet of things and sustainable energy solutions.
