Lidl is expanding its EV fast charging network in Poland with ABB chargers

2017-06-06 - ABB has provided three EV fast charging stations for Lidl Polska. The retail store chain also purchased ABB's original application which uses capabilities of the new ABB Ability™ digital offer. The application will allow to monitor and manage Lidl’s own charging network, consisting of four DC fast chargers in Poland.

Lidl companies across Europe have been investing in e-mobility for more than a year. During the last months, Lidl is also making such investments in Poland. Three stores already provide clients with the possibility to charge their electric cars fast and free of charge. The first fast charger was installed in Poznań, at the 600th Lidl store in Poland. The other three, delivered under the latest order, were installed at new stores in Warsaw – on Modlińska and Puławska streets – and at the Distribution Centre in Gródków, Silesia. The same charger model – Terra 53 CJG – was selected for each location.

This particular charging station has been installed at Lidl stores across Europe: over 100 charging stations are available in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Slovakia, France, Switzerland, Spain and Hungary. And following its strategy of sustainable development, Lidl plans to install even more such charging stations.

The market for electric vehicles continues to grow, with more than 40% electric vehicles sold in 2016 compared to 2015. The positive trend is forecast to continue and there will be more and more clients who will take their e-car to go shopping.

Lidl is setting a good direction for the retail industry. Charging vehicles at large stores, malls and offices will become more and more popular. The process will be completed while you shop or have meetings. However, the power of the stations must be increased so that the charging period becomes relatively short and tailored to the customer needs – explains Wojciech Dziwisz, E-Mobility Business Development Manager, ABB in Poland.

- In Lidl Polska we act sustainably, basing on our CSR strategy. Our shops are equipped with many pro ecological solutions, e.g. heat recovery from refrigeration equipment, heat recovery ventilation, ground source heat pumps, LED lights and also large glazed windows allowing optimal use of sun light. Lately we have gone a step further. The 600th Lidl shop in Poland built in Poznan has been additionally equipped with photovoltaic panels producing electricity from the sun. Moreover we have installed the above mentioned charging station for electric cars and a bicycle station integrated with the city infrastructure – says Aleksandra Robaszkiewicz from Lidl Polska. – In Lidl we believe, that a responsible company can do more. ABB's charging stations comply with three international charging standards - for DC charging of cars manufactured in Japan (CHAdeMO) as well as cars manufactured in the USA and Germany (Combo 2) and the AC charging standard (Type 2 Standard). The stations are therefore suitable for all types of electric cars available on the market. ABB is at the forefront of this technology, providing up to 65 per cent of fast charging stations in Europe. So far, the company has sold over 5,000 DC charging points worldwide.

Electromobility in ABB Ability cloud
An important part of Lidl’s contract is “Drive Care” - a package of communication and charging station managing systems. With this application, Lidl will be able to constantly monitor the parameters of its charging points, including the power consumption for each of them, or to calculate statistics over a defined period.

As a standard, our stations are connected to the cloud platform, allowing us to collect real-time device specifications or conduct remote diagnostics. This also makes it possible to plan the maintenance properly to eliminate potential failures and to put in place an action plan within the shortest possible time. This significantly accelerates the entire maintenance and service processes. The reliability and the possibility of restoring the station’s operation quickly are crucial in e-mobility – adds Wojciech Dziwisz.

All processes of collecting and processing data from the station are a part of ABB Ability™. It uses a global digital platform located in the Microsoft Azure cloud, which continually recalculates and analyses data received from the connected devices. In total, ABB Ability includes more than 180 digital solutions and services. Thanks to industry expertise and capabilities of internet connections, as well as the latest digital technologies, these solutions can significantly improve ABB clients’ operational efficiency and productivity in a number of areas.

How does charging electric cars work?
Currently, two technologies are used to charge electric cars – charging with alternate or direct current. Alternate current allows you to charge cars depending on the power of the charger built into the vehicle. So, those with 3.6 kW chargers will charge for 8 to 10 hours, those with 7.2 kW chargers – for 5 to 6 hours, and those with max. 22kW chargers – for approx. an hour. DC charging is a newer technology practically available for all electric cars that allows to charge a battery from 0 to 80 percent in as little as half an hour. The last stage of charging, due to the technological limitations of the battery and its tendency to overheat, takes place with lower power.
