Breaking ice and saving energy in the Antarctic

CAPTION: The Almirante Irízar is an icebreaker that links Argentina to its research stations, bases and outposts in Antarctica. The vessel was gutted by fire in 2007. ABB is supplying a complete new power plant and electric propulsion system, control systems, engineering, installation, commissioning and training in a tight delivery deadline to get the icebreaker back into service as soon as possible.
