ABB to supply digital control technology for renewable power plant in South Korea

ABB is to supply its state-of-the-art distributed control system (DCS), ABB Ability Symphony Plus, to the largest Solid Refuse Fuel (SRF) power plant in South Korea. Part of the ABB Ability digital offering, Symphony Plus is the latest in a long line of power generation control technology developments from ABB, who has helped improve the productivity, efficiency, and reliability of industrial processes for the last 100 years.

Construction of the SRF plant, which is owned by Naepo Green Energy, has recently begun in Naepo New City, around 100 kilometers southeast of Seoul, in South Korea’s fastest growing region. Scheduled for commissioning in 2019, the 66 megawatt plant will provide heat and electricity for the local district, producing this energy from domestic waste. SRF is a more sustainable alternative to consuming fossil fuels and one way of tackling increasing amounts of waste production. It also avoids landfilling, which can pollute the surrounding soil and groundwater with toxins.

ABB will provide complete design, engineering, commissioning and training for its Symphony Plus DCS, including the latest generation of SD Series energy-efficient control and I/O modules. They use less than 50 percent of the energy required by others in the market, further supporting the customer’s sustainable generation efforts. The flexible and scalable DCS architecture also allows and supports expandable systems – an advantage for the Naepo New City plant in case of future growth.

Upon commissioning, Symphony Plus will offer plant performance monitoring of the boiler, turbine and its auxiliaries, by combining intelligent data analysis with an innovative calculation algorithm, using data generated by the plant. This digitalization-driven benefit will provide the customer with actionable insights based on data analysis, ultimately allowing them to improve asset performance, efficiency and profitability. While overcoming the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution, ABB is able to draw on its long-standing spirit of control technology innovation that represents its roots to the future.
