ABB to launch new flush-mounted rotary LED-dimmer, taking dimming solutions to an entirely new level

2017-08-02 - New dimmer solution combines elegant look with high-level technology and energy efficiency to suit every requirement.

ABB, the pioneering technology leader, is about to launch the successor to their extremely popular flush-mounted rotary dimmer 6523 U-102. With LED lights representing the most modern and efficient sources of light, ABB has teamed up with market-leading LED manufacturers to develop their new product, an LED-dimmer that perfectly harmonizes with LED lamps. The new solution, 6523 UR-103, is a very flat flush-mounted LED-dimmer. It can be installed with a depth of less than 20mm below the mounting plate and without the use of any claws. Therefore, it fits perfectly into hollow walls or corner boxes.

Until now, flat flush-mounted LED-dimmers were not available on the market, but now that ABB has taken on the challenge, life for the installer has been made easier. By solving the problem of limited space in installation boxes it is now easy to install and replace dimmers that work optimally with LEDs to make their operation flicker-free with no uncomfortable buzzing or humming noises. The significant decrease of noise during operation is achieved by the use of an electronic transistor dimmer, making the dimmer highly suitable for installation in hollow or wooden walls.

Regarding the technical aspects, the dimmer is equipped with an operating mode selector switch for optimal operation of connected lamps and also supports the operation of mixed loads for both, LEDs and conventional lamps. Nonetheless, due to different brightness values that may occur at the same dimmer setting with different lamps, it is recommended to use LEDs produced by the same manufacturer. During operation, the connection load with LEDs can differ between 2-100 W/VA in leading edge and 2-400 W/VA in trailing edge mode.

By using a potentiometer with soft click notches, the dimmer provides a pleasant haptic feedback signal during dimming. It comes with an additional memory function, which remembers the brightness value last set and retains it after switch-off.

Due to the design being suitable for network frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz, the dimmer can be used for a wide range of application areas, including generator networks on ships for example.

ABB currently produces four different versions of the new dimming solution. It is either available as rotary dimmer (ABB and Busch-Jaeger brand available) or complete dimmer (including rotary dimmer, centerplate and knob). It is also possible to combine it with any other rotary know fitting on a 6 mm potentiometer. This makes the dimmers compatible with all Range 60 programs like Jussi or Impressivo design. 6523 UR-103 will be sold under the Busch-Jaeger brand in Germany, the Netherlands and Austria and under the ABB brand in all other markets around the world.
