ABB to supply the first Polish-made gas turbine for Poland - to convert an existing cogeneration plant into a combined-cycle heating and power plant
Zurich, Switzerland, June 18, 1996 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has won an order valued at over US$ 30 million to convert an existing coal-fired cogeneration plant into a modern gas-fired combined-cycle heating and power plant. The plant is located in Gorzow Wielkopolski in western Poland, approximately 50 kilometers from the border with Germany. The order was awarded to ABB Zamech Ltd, Elblag, near Gdansk - ABB`s joint venture power generation manufacturer in Poland - by Cogeneration Plant Gorzow, the local generating utility. The modernized plant is scheduled to return to commercial service by mid-1998. The order creates a precedent in the history of the Polish power generation industry, being the first Polish power plant to be equipped with a gas turbine manufactured in Poland. ABB Zamech has manufactured 17 of these 50-megawatt ABB type GT8 gas turbines, but up to now only for export.
ABB will supply a 55-megawatt type GT8C gas turboset, the associated heat recovery steam generator, the overall plant control system and various electrical infrastructure equipment. ABB will also be responsible for the necessary additional civil works and the training of the client`s personnel. The plant will generate electricity for the local power grid, and produce heat in the form of hot water for the local community and process steam for industrial customers.
The modernized plant will incorporate ABB`s advanced combined-cycle techology with low-NOx burners, which achieve high fuel efficiency with low emissions, enabling the client to withdraw from operation the existing coal-fired boilers and thereby enhance the local environment. The new fuel for the plant will be supplied from nearby natural gas resources in western Poland.
In Poland, ABB employs over 6,000 people in 12 companies with orders in 1995 of approximately US$ 450 million. ABB`s Power Generation segment employs more than 46,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of over US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 210,000 people with orders in 1995 of over US$ 36 billion.
