ABB confirms order for power plant in Vietnam

ABB consortium receives USD 100-million order to build Vietnam's largest gas turbine power plant.

Zurich, Switzerland, January 17, 1996 - A consortium led by ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has received a contract, valued at approximately USD 100 million from Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) to build the 287-megawatt Phu My 2 gas turbine power plant. The power plant is ABB's second gas turbine project in Vietnam and will be located at Phu My, some 70 kilometers south-east of Ho Chi Minh City in the southern province of Ba Ria. The project is being financed through the World Bank and Vietnamese financial institutions and will be executed as a fast track project to help meet the country's rapidly growing power requirements. Construction will begin in February 1996 and electricity from the plant is expected to be available within 13 months.

ABB will supply two gas turbosets, air-cooled generators, the power plant control system, auxiliary electrical equipment, and will be responsible for overall project management and technical and commercial coordination. ABB's consortium partner, the Japanese trading house Marubeni Corporation, will be responsible for the civil engineering, construction, and the supply of the balance of plant, including the associated switchyard. Natural gas fuel for the plant will come from Vietnam's off-shore gas fields located off the Vung Tau coast.

The power plant will incorporate ABB's advanced GT13E2 gas turbines, which achieve high fuel efficiency with low emissions. The turbines will be configured in two simple-cycle blocks, with each block comprising a gas turbine coupled to a single generator. The advantages of this system are operating simplicity and fast start-up times which will enable the power plant to respond quickly to rapid changes expected in the regions load demand.

ABB's Power Generation segment employs more than 40,000 people worldwide with orders in 1994 of nearly USD 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 212,000 people with orders in 1994 of nearly USD 32 billion.
