ABB wins major USD 400 million order for advanced gas turbines

Order to build 2000-megawatt combined-cycle power plant in South Korea with ABB's latest technology gas turbines Zurich, Switzerland, January 29, 1996 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has received an order to build a 2000-megawatt combined-cycle power plant in South Korea. The order, of which the ABB part is valued at approximately USD 400 million, was placed by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), South Korea's public utility. The power plant will be one of the largest and most efficient combined-cycle plants in South Korea and will be located in Poryong, some 180 kilometers southwest of Seoul. The order was won with ABB's latest generation of high-performance GT24 sequential combustion system gas turbines in an intensely competitive international market. The project, financed by KEPCO, will supply electricity to the utility's rapidly growing base of industrial and residential customers. Construction of the plant is scheduled to begin in April 1996 with electricity from the first

turbosets to be available within 15 months. The total plant will be completed in 27 months.

ABB will supply eight gas turbines and the associated heat recovery steam generators, steam turbines, electricity generators, power plant control system and auxiliary equipment. ABB will be responsible for the main mechanical supply, technical supervision, and erection and commissioning. When fully operational, the plant will achieve an overall fuel efficiency of nearly 60 percent.

The award is ABB's largest order to date for the GT24 advanced sequential combustion gas turbine. Instead of the conventional approach of improving the performance by increasing the firing temperature with complex cooling technology, ABB's sequential combustion turbines have two combustion chambers where fuel is simultaneously combusted. This process enables higher fuel efficiency with lower emissions to be achieved at a lower firing temperature. ABB has received previous orders for this technology from utilities in the USA and Germany.

ABB's Power Generation segment employs more than 40,000 people worldwide with orders in 1994 of nearly USD 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 212,000 people with orders in 1994 of nearly USD 32 billion.
