ABB wins accolade for taking manufacturing excellence to the next level

2015-11-24 - Generator circuit-breaker (GCB) manufacturing facility in Switzerland wins MX (Manufacturing Excellence) Award 2015

ABB’s state-of-the-art GCB factory in Zurich has won the MX Award 2015, an acclaimed platform for benchmarking excellence and best practices in the manufacturing sector. The facility previously won the award of Best Factory in Europe in 2010, and continues to raise the bar in world-class manufacturing practices.

The approach at this manufacturing unit is based on the ‘lean enterprise’ concept where processes are continuously optimized to reduce key input requirements like time, space and capital. This has resulted in improved processes, enhanced products and best-in-class customer service that are well recognized in the industry. As the global business environment gets more challenging, efficiency and the ability to respond to changing requirements becomes ever more important.

Setting new industry standards

Each year, the MX Organization embarks on a mission to find new, innovative best practices in the world of manufacturing through its benchmarking competition, the MX Award. The jury includes prominent academics under the leadership of the Technical University of Berlin and industry specialists.

ABB’s GCB factory was named the overall winner of the MX Award 2015 for demonstrating best practices in its business operations with process innovation and high customer orientation at its core.

In addition, it also won in the category of “Information Technology” where technology is best utilized to support its business processes.

The jury was particularly impressed by the strong alignment of strategy and actions supported by a lean management approach that results in quick implementation whenever changes are required. Consistent use of visualization for the entire value chain fosters effective communications that support relentless execution. They praised the comprehensive use of information technology (IT) tools, which supports ABB’s Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP) approach.

Innovation and customer focus are keys to success

“The key to our success is driven primarily by a culture of innovation and operational excellence with strong customer focus. This is in line with ABB’s Next Level Strategy with an emphasis on transforming business processes to become more agile and focused on customer needs,” said Daniel Zeidler, manager of the award winning GCB unit.

Having already received many accolades such as MX Award in the category of “Customer Orientation” in 2014 and Swiss LEAN Award in the category of “Sales & Service” in 2015, ABB’s GCB factory continues to set benchmarks for how the factory of the future could operate.

ABB is the world’s largest supplier of GCBs. These essential devices protect power plants by clearing potential harmful short-circuit faults, thereby preventing severe damage to key power plant equipment. Today, with the most powerful GCB in its portfolio, ABB continues to drive innovation with over 8,000 GCBs installed in all types of power plants worldwide.
