Gottardo 2016 – the countdown has started

2016-05-12 - The new Gotthard Base Tunnel, the longest rail tunnel in the world, will be officially opened on June 1 this year.

The following weekend, from June 4th, a public festival will be held to celebrate the event. As a main partner, ABB will be present at the opening events, with our technologies on display in two spectacular pavilions at the north and south portals in Switzerland.

Twenty-four years after the Swiss electorate voted “yes” to proposals for a new transalpine tunnel and 17 years after blasting began in the Gotthard massif, the longest rail tunnel in the world is finally ready to open. Switzerland has invested more than $12 billion in what has become known as the “construction project of the century.”

The success of the project will be celebrated in style. ABB is main partner of the “Gottardo 2016” opening celebrations and will be prominently represented. For the official ceremony on June 1, the entire Swiss Federal Council (the seven-member executive of the Swiss Federal Government) will receive the heads of state and government of neighboring countries and other official guests, among them ABB Chairman Peter Voser and CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer. Around 300 international media representatives will also attend the event.

On the weekend of June 4 and 5, the general public will be invited to join the celebrations. Up to 100’000 visitors are expected to attend. They will be able to learn more about ABB’s contribution to the tunnel at both the festival grounds in Rynächt at the north end of the tunnel and in Pollegio at the southern end.

The exhibits will focus on ABB’s technologies in the Base Tunnel as well ABB’s historical links to the Gotthard Mountain. ABB’s contribution to the transport sector, the environment and education will also be presented. YuMi will also be active on site. The human-friendly, dual-arm robot will encourage visitors to participate in a competition.
