ABB introduces the IRB 4450S - a new six-axis shelf robot ideal for tending mid-size injection moulding machines (IMM’s).
In contrast to conventional six-axis robots, shelf robots have their principal working envelope below the foot. Thus, from its elevated position on top or adjacent to the IMM, the IRB 4450S reaches more than 1m below its foot, providing quick and easy access to the workpiece or to the die in the machine.
The exceptional reach, complemented by a payload of 30 kg, make the IRB 4450S particularly suited to applications where space is at a minimum, as is often found in plastic injection moulding applications.
The IRB 4450S is an attractive alternative to the three-axis robot, traditionally used for IMM tending. The ABB robot’s six-axis technology makes it superior in versatility, reach and precision - qualities that help minimise cycle times and optimise product quality.
Additionally, the IRB 4450S can perform post-process tasks in parallel during each ‘shoot’, while conventional three-axis robots remain idle due to their purely linear movement limitations. Post-process tasks can include cleaning, flaming, quality control, punching and assembly, allowing plant designers to reduce the number of downstream stations and reduce plant throughput times.
The rigid, well balanced design, which complements the patented TrueMove function, provides smooth and fast movement throughout the whole working range. This ensures very high quality in demanding routines, while rapid manoeuvrability makes the IRB 4450S perfectly matched for applications where speed and flexibility are important.
The IRB 4450S is also perfect where minimal maintenance and high ‘up’ times are essential. The robust, rigid construction means long intervals between routine maintenance. Balanced steel arms with double bearing joints, a torque strut on axis 2, and use of maintenance-free gearbox and cabling also contribute to the very highest levels of reliability. Last but not least, the drive train is optimised to give high torque with low power consumption, for very economic operation.
The IRB 4450S is based on ABB’s high-volume IRB 4400 series conventional, floor-mounted industrial robots. With almost 10,000 units sold to date, the IRB 4400 has proven its superior performance and robustness to customers around the world.
