ABB expands new rib-cooled motor range with higher powers and IP66 protection

Helsinki, Finland, December 10, 2014 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is further extending its high voltage rib-cooled motor platform, type NXR, to higher powers with the addition of a new frame size. The motors are now available in frame sizes 355 – 450 and in the power range of 100 - 1250 kW. At the same time the whole range is enhanced with optional increased protection ratings up to IP66. ABB’s new range offers substantial improvements over previous product generations.

High ingress protection – available across the whole power range - marks a significant advance for high voltage electric motors, as there have previously been few products on the market offering IP66 protection. Higher protection is especially important for applications where dust is present, such as in the mining and cement industries. IP66 means that the enclosure is completely dust tight and will withstand powerful water jets. IP Codes are based on an IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard, and the design of ABB’s motors has been verified by a leading independent testing organization.

“We continue to invest and expand our high voltage rib-cooled range, type NXR,” says Lena Wäppling, global product group manager, large AC motors. “Since the initial launch in early 2014, we’ve introduced versions for use with variable speed drives (VSDs) and products for 60 Hz. Now we’re adding a larger frame size and optional ingress protection up to IP66. In the near future we’ll be announcing even more new features and range extensions, making the innovations that come with this new generation of motors available to more and more customers.”

The “next generation HXR”
ABB’s latest high voltage rib-cooled motor platform, type NXR, is based on the well established and successful HXR range. ABB applied its experience – gained over more than 100 years as a motor manufacturer – to completely re-design the existing motors. The best possible cooling performance was achieved through extensive research into internal and external airflows. The size, shape and positioning of the cooling ribs have been optimized, and pre-engineered fixing points are provided on the sides for accessories. This makes it easy to install accessories on the outside and ensures that airflows over the cooling surfaces are not affected.

The main and auxiliary terminal boxes can be mounted on either side or end, and they can be repositioned on site by ABB Service personnel. For plant operators, this flexibility can mean significant savings as it may be possible to reduce the number of spare motors that have to be kept in stock.

Internally, a new coil design helps to increase the power density, and the operating temperature has been balanced throughout the motor for longer bearing lifetimes and extended lubrication intervals. The frame is extremely robust for minimum vibration.

Maintainability is enhanced by features like easy access to check the coil ends and bearings. These can be inspected with an endoscope without the need to remove the end shields. The wide range of standardized accessories includes two advanced condition monitoring systems, ABB MACHsense-P and ABB MACHsense-R, that can detect potential problems at a very early stage, before they become serious. By enabling precisely targeted and timely maintenance, these systems help to reduce downtime and therefore lower the plant operator’s overall cost of ownership.
