ABB wins $36-million order from ThyssenKrupp

Power products, engineering to improve performance of new steel plant

Zurich, Switzerland, December 12, 2006 - ABB, the leading power and automation group, has won a contract worth $36 million from ThyssenKrupp for engineering and power equipment to ensure high productivity and energy efficiency at a new steel plant in Brazil.

ABB will carry out extensive engineering work and supply power equipment, including a 138-kilovolt (kV) substation, high- and medium-voltage switchgear, transformers and power cables. ABB booked the order in the fourth quarter of 2006.

“The combination of ABB’s automation and power engineering expertise provides stable, efficient systems for important steel projects like this,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. “ABB’s advanced technology, custom-made solutions and excellent reference sites in Brazil helped us to win this contract.”

The steel plant southeast of Rio de Janeiro is a joint venture of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG, one of Europe’s largest steelmakers, and Brazilian ore producer Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), the largest producer of iron ore and pellets in the world.

It will have two blast furnaces, two converters and two continuous casting plants. When it begins operations in 2008, the plant will produce about five million tons of slab steel annually for North American and European markets.

This is ABB’s latest project for ThyssenKrupp. Others include a contract in 2005 to provide power and automation for a new cold rolling steel mill in Terni, Italy, as well as power and automation packages for ThyssenKrupp cold rolling mills in Shanghai, China, in 2003, and in Krefeld, Germany, in 2002.

ABB ( is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 107,000 people.
