ABB technology will increase renewable usage and grid stability

April 17, 2018 - ABB is collaborating with leading utility and academic partners to develop a technology that will allow more renewable energy into transmission grids without jeopardizing grid stability or power quality

Renewable energy presently comprises about 25 percent of the UK’s electricity generation mix. While this is environmentally friendly, the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources also creates challenges for grid stability and for transmission networks that have always relied on conventional large-scale power generation plants.

ABB joins forces with project partners SP Energy Networks - the distribution arm ScottishPower, National Grid in the UK in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde and the Technical University of Denmark to develop an innovative solution to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources used in the UK power grid, whilst coping with the shutdown of nuclear and thermal power stations.

The world’s first Hybrid Synchronous Compensator (H-SC) combines two existing technologies, a Synchronous Condenser (SC) and a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). These complementary technologies can be deployed together in future power grids to provide the much needed grid stability.

The key innovation in this project is a hybrid control system that will integrate two technologies into a seamless solution to ensure grid stability and power quality. As it is more widely deployed, the H-SC will not only improve power quality and grid stability, delivering significant benefits to the grid in Great Britain, it will also help minimize any risks of outages for millions of consumers.

As part of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), the H-SC will enable more power to reach consumers through existing transmission networks, address voltage and frequency stability issues, and help transmission systems operate more efficiently.
