ABB recognized for the world’s first IED configuration tool certified for IEC 61850

2016-08-25 - ABB received the independently verified certificate for PCM600, the intelligent electronic device (IED) configuration tool with IEC 61850 Edition 2 standard, at CIGRE in Paris.

The protection and control manager, PCM600 for ABB’s Relion® product family, is the world’s first IED configuration tool with IEC 61850 Edition 2 conformance, thus setting a benchmark for what is expected in terms of application configuration and communication engineering. The IEC 61850 standard facilitates and secures multivendor product and system interoperability.

ABB played a key role in developing the global IEC 61850 standard and carried out the world’s first multi-vendor IEC 61850 installation in 2004 at one of Europe’s biggest and most important substations. It is one of the most significant developments in substation automation and protection technology and fulfills the requirement for a single global standard for interoperability and real-time communication and data exchange between critical substation automation devices.

“PCM600 has been designed from the beginning with the IEC 61850 standard in mind. All the functionality is modeled in a way that it reflects IEC 61850 configuration directly during the engineering”, said Massimo Danieli, Managing Director for ABB’s Grid Automation business unit within the company’s Power Grids division. “With full IEC 61850 integration there is no need for additional conversions, which further improves the overall productivity and quality, in line with our Next Level strategy.”

Enhanced user experience

PCM600 is an IED configuration tool that provides versatile functionalities required throughout the life cycle of the Relion protection and control IEDs in transmission and distribution applications. It is possible to see the whole IED application at a glance with PCM600, which makes the tool stand out in terms of user experience. In one configuration drawing you can see all protection, control and logic functions, and traceable signal flow from input to output. Usability and efficiency aspects are supported by the various filtering options and the rule-based parameter setting, which hides parameters if they are not needed or used by the protection functions.

To help with detecting inconsistencies in hardware, configurations, parameter settings or communications, users are able to compare the complete IED configuration between different IED applications, both online and offline. Additionally, users are always able to use the latest software version, ensured by PCM600’s Update Manager, which simplifies installation of IED specific connectivity packages, language add-ons and the latest software updates.

The testing and approval process

ABB and DNV GL, a world-leading provider of testing, certification and advisory services, initiated the certification program for system engineering tools in late 2014 to bring the quality of the tools to the next level. As part of the testing and approval process -- the UCA International User Group (UCAIug) is also involved. The mission of the UCA International Users Group is to enable integration through the deployment of open standards by providing a forum in which the various stakeholders in the energy and utility industry can work cooperatively together as members of a common organization.

With the certification of the protection and control manager PCM600, ABB is strengthening its leading position in the development of IEC 61850 substation automation tools. Earlier this year, ABB’s system configuration tool IET600 was also awarded the world’s first IEC 61850 tool conformance certification. ABB now have certified conformance with IEC 61850 edition 2 across the Relion family of protection and control IEDs, the substation HMI, as well as the device and system configuration tools.
