ABB wins US$ 18 million in orders for China metro lines

Largest order ever for ABB’s medium voltage products in China

Zurich, Switzerland, April 28, 2003 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today it had won orders to supply medium-voltage gas insulated switchgear (GIS) for Guangzhou metro line 3 and Shenzhen metro line 1, with a combined value of US$ 18 million. This is the largest order ever received in by ABB’s medium-voltage business, which is ABB’s first joint venture in China, established in 1992.

Under the terms of contract, 237 units of 33 kV-GIS switchgears, valued US$ 11 million, will be delivered to the Guangzhou Metro line 3 project during the first half of 2004. ABB had previously supplied line 2. In addition, 152 units switchgears units of the same specification valued US$ 7 million, will be supplied to the Shenzhen metro line 1 by September 2003.

The switchgear that will be supplied feature compact design with low maintenance requirements. They will be manufactured by ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co. Ltd, the first joint venture of ABB in China. The factory offers a complete range of air- and gas insulated medium voltage switchgear.

As a major supplier of electrical power technology products for mass transit project in China, ABB’s previous orders included low voltage switchgear for Shenzhen Metro line 1; low and medium voltage switchgear for the first light rail line in Beijng and Tianjin; and 33 kV GIS switchgear for Guangzhou Metro line 2 and Xin-Min line of Shanghai metro.

The 36.1 km Guangzhou Metro line 3 links the Tianhe, Haizhu and Panyu districts of Guangzhou city and is scheduled for operation in 2006. The 19.5 km Shenzhen metro phase one covering line 1 and line 4 are now under construction and scheduled for completion at the end of 2003.
