ABB invests $11m in new test lab for low-voltage power solutions

2017-11-30 - A new low-voltage laboratory in Västerås, Sweden comes online in Q1 2019. This major investment aims to accelerate innovation and continuous quality advances

Västerås, Sweden, November 30, 2017 - ABB is building a new test laboratory in Sweden to accelerate the company’s roll out of advanced new low-voltage power control technologies. The $10.7 million, 1200 square metre facility, due to open in Q1 of 2019, represents a significant expansion of ABB’s global testing and development network for low-voltage power products.

The new Västerås laboratory, located just west of Stockholm, will specialize in the development and testing of key electrical control technologies, including contactors and soft starters. ABB has just launched a range of efficient new contactors that increase system uptime and cut coil consumption by up to 80%.

Johan Söderström, Managing Director of ABB Sweden, said: “The investment in this new test lab shows ABB’s commitment to technological leadership and high quality standards. The facility will effectively double our testing capacity, enabling us to get innovative, proven products into the market faster than ever.”

ABB’s Protection & Connection business supplies industrial and residential sites with solutions that make low-voltage power networks smarter, safer and more efficient. Its focus on making power technologies more intelligent and robust helps improve the reliability and efficiency of critical operations and essential services. The laboratory is one of Protection & Connection’s largest infrastructure investments in recent years.

Tobias Gentzell, Global R&D Manager for ABB’s Motor Starting and Safety business, said: “ABB’s contactors and soft starters are the first choice for applications that require higher standards of reliability and quality. We will use the new facility to develop and test new products that build on our world leading position and to make technical support for customer projects and other ABB business units even faster and more responsive.”
