ABB extends power range and frame sizes of its high voltage rib cooled motors

2016-03-15 - Two new frame sizes of the latest generation of high voltage rib cooled motors offer a lightweight, compact solution that packs more power per kilogram than other versions on the market. Together with an optional, independently certified IP66 rating, the motor’s design brings enhanced reliability and ease of maintenance.

Helsinki, Finland, March 15, 2016 — ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has extended its NXR high voltage rib cooled motor range, adding a 315 and 500 frame to the existing 355, 400 and 450 frame sizes, increasing the power range up to 1,800 kW.

The NXR motor is one of the first of its type to have an IP66 rating independently certified. This robust level of protection, which is available across the entire product range, is an important step forward in high voltage motors, there are only a few products on the market offering IP66 protection. IP66 means that the enclosure is completely dust tight and will withstand powerful water jets, which makes it ideal for mining and cement applications.

The motor’s additional frames and power range provide a complete offering for safe area applications such as pumps, fans and compressors used in mining, cement, power, water, oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

Core benefits of the motor platform include high power density, increased reliability and easy maintenance, all of which reduce the cost of ownership.

The motor’s coil design helps to increase the power density, enabling the NXR motor to pack more power per kilogram compared to equivalent types in the market. As such its lighter weight makes the motor easier to transport, lift and install. In fact, by keeping one shaft height smaller than similar motors on the market, the weight is reduced by up to 20 percent.

Reliability is built on the use of a proven insulation system, bearing design and rotor construction. Furthermore, airflow and cooling technology, developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, ensures well balanced heat distribution, increasing insulation and bearing lifetime.

Coil ends and bearings can be inspected using an endoscope without removing the end shields. Additionally, ABB’s MACHsense-P and ABB MACHsense-R condition monitoring systems, available as part of the motor’s wide range of standardized accessories, help to reduce downtime. These systems enable targeted and timely maintenance, and can detect potential problems at a very early stage, before they become serious.
