ABB wins power equipment contract in UAE

2005-08-10 - Gas-insulated high-voltage switchgear will strengthen power supply

Zurich, Switzerland, August 10, 2005 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a contract worth $15 million for power equipment to help meet the growing demand for power in northern parts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The contract, signed with the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) in Dubai, includes the supply of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) equipment and associated control and protection panels.

“This is the latest in a series of orders in the UAE and other parts of the Middle East for our technology to strengthen power supply,” said Peter Smits, head of ABB’s Power Technologies division. “Our strong local presence is another key factor in meeting our customers’ requirements.”

The contract comprises the delivery of three 132 kV GIS stations including control and protection panels. The substations are scheduled to begin operation in late 2006 and 2007.

GIS provides a high degree of reliability even in harsh environments. The technology is also very compact and reduces the size of an installation – which is particularly important when real-estate is scarce and expensive.

ABB ( is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering their environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 103,000 people.
