2002-10-15 - ABB Wins Turnkey Mine Service
St-Laurent, October 9, 2002 - ABB has recently been awarded a turnkey contract for a major mine service hoist upgrade project being implemented by Inco Ltd. at its Creighton mine in Sudbury, Ontario.
- Under the terms of the contract, ABB’s Montréal-based Mining Systems group will design, supply, install and commission a new 4500 HP AC synchronous motor, an AC drive system with direct torque control, PLC-based hoist control systems, along with a hoist operator control room and related interface equipment.
- ABB’s ACS6000 AC drive technology was selected by Inco after its engineering team spent one full year researching alternative mine hoist drive solutions. ABB was chosen for its system’s high dynamic performance, zero reactive power consumption, and significantly reduced harmonic generation. This is a modular drive available in many different configurations for powers up to 27MVA and is extremely well suited to mine hoist applications.
- Installation and commissioning of ABB’s new AC motor and drive system is scheduled to be completed during a four-week shutdown at the Creighton mine in 2003.
