2014-03-04 - ABB’s doubly-fed generators - which incorporate an advanced rotor design and durable slip ring unit - have proven themselves as a reliable choice for a long lifetime with maximum availability.
ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is extending its economical doubly-fed product family with a new generator in frame size 560. Offering efficiency of approx. 97.5% at its rated speed, the new generator also introduces a new level of slip ring units designed for low maintenance.
Following the introduction of the new generator, ABB’s standard doubly-fed family covers powers from 1.5 to more than 3 MW. The doubly-fed generators are designed for demanding reactive power production with high stability in sudden overspeeds. They can be either air or water cooled and are available for both 50 and 60 Hz networks.
ABB’s robust doubly-fed generators incorporate an advanced rotor designed to withstand overspeeds and voltage peaks. It features patented carbon-fiber winding-end support rings, an increased insulation level and efficient cooling. ABB DF generators’ proven operational performance record – which extends over more than a decade - makes them a reliable choice for a long lifetime with maximum availability and a low cost of ownership.
All ABB high speed wind generators (doubly-fed, induction and PM) are based on a modular platform principle. Together with ABB’s flexible turbine interface, this means that the generators fit in most turbine types.
“This new multi-MW class doubly-fed generator builds on our long-term strategy to meet the needs of turbine manufacturers. We have standardized the basic structure across the product family, which means we can use serial manufacturing to achieve cost-effective products with short delivery times. As part of our ABB wind economy offering we supply fully compatible ‘plug and play’ generator-converter packages that are tested together and ready for operation,” says Raimo Sakki, product manager for wind power generators at ABB.
The new generator will be officially introduced at the EWEA annual event, which will be held in Barcelona, Spain, March 10 - 13.
Over the last 30 years ABB has supplied more than 35,000 wind power generators for all drivetrain types from low speed direct drive and medium speed hybrid to high speed PMGs. It has been manufacturing doubly-fed, semi-variable speed generators since 1997 and has more than 50 years of experience in these types of asynchronous wound rotor slip ring motors and generators. In addition to our standard family series, we can make custom designs up to 20 MW. ABB is also a leading manufacturer of optimized generator-converter packages.
