ABB inaugurates power transformer factory in Italy

2009-10-15 - Small power transformer site in Monselice to supply Europe and serve as export base

Monselice, October 15, 2009 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, inaugurated a new production facility in Monselice, Italy to strengthen its transformer manufacturing network. This unit will produce small power transformers up to 170 kV, serving the power and distribution needs of utility and industry customers.

“This state-of-the-art manufacturing facility will help meet local demand and serve as our sourcing base for the European, Middle East and African markets,” said Hanspeter Faessler, Country Manager for ABB in Italy and Head of the Mediterranean region.

With 40,000 square meters of manufacturing and R&D facilities including 20 percent green area, this new factory is double the size of the one it replaces. The buildings are designed to optimize energy efficiency, with solar panels for hot water, high efficiency air conditioning and intelligent building automation and controls with the help of ABB’s I-bus system. This facility joins two other power products manufacturing centers in Veneto – Montebello Vicentino and Ceggia, which are part of ABB’s recently acquired company, Comem.

The unit has an annual manufacturing capacity of around 9,000 MVA. The flexible manufacturing process allows for modulation of peak loads to help meet delivery schedules. The plant is also equipped with state-of-the-art winding and automated core cutting machines to further reduce production time.

“This is yet another example of ABB’s optimized global footprint approach and our philosophy of having production centers located close to markets”, said Tarak Mehta, global head of ABB’s transformers business.

Among those present at the inauguration ceremony were the Mayor of Monselice, Francesco Lunghi, Fabio Conte, a delegate of the President of Padova district and Bernhard Jucker, global head of the Power Products division and member of ABB’s Group Executive Committee.
