ABB wins approx. US$ 200-million contract for U.S. emission control system

Order at Pennsylvania coal-fired plant is largest-ever for ABB’s environmental systems

Zurich, Switzerland, May 11, 1999 – ABB has been awarded a contract to supply and construct emission control systems at a large coal-fired power plant in the U.S. The order, worth approximately US$ 200 million, was awarded by EME Homer City Generation L.P., a unit of U.S.-based Edison International’s wholly-owned global power subsidiary, Edison Mission Energy. The system is to be installed at the company’s 1,884-megawatt coal-fired power station in Homer City, Pennsylvania, 75 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Pittsburgh. Equipment deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fall of 1999, with operations beginning in the fall of 2001.

Under the terms of the contract, ABB will supply and install selective catalytic reduction systems to capture nitrogen oxide emissions, as well as a wet flue-gas desulfurization system (WFGD) to remove sulfur oxide emissions. The WFGD system is expected to reduce generating costs by allowing the plant flexibility to burn a wider variety of coal types while maintaining emission standards.

The order is the biggest-ever in dollar value for ABB’s environmental systems business, which designs and manufactures a wide range of air pollution and emission control systems for the power generation industry.
