ABB wins US$ 660-million combined-cycle power plant order in Taiwan

Taiwan’s first independent power producer orders ABB’s advanced GT24 gas turbine

Zurich, Switzerland, January 20, 1998 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has been awarded a contract to build a 960-megawatt gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Taiwan. The order, valued at US$ 660 million, was placed by Ever Power IPP Co. Ltd. Ever Power is an affiliate of the Ever Fortune Group based in Taichung, Taiwan. Taiwan’s first independent power producer is located at Hai-Fu,

30 kilometers from Taiwan’s capital, Taipei. Power from the plant will be sold to the national utility, Taiwan Power Company. The plant is scheduled for connection to the national grid by July 1999. Financial closing took place today when a group of Taiwanese Banks completed the arrangement of financing.
ABB will supply four GT24 advanced gas turbines equipped with low-NOx burners which reduce emissions while achieving high thermal efficiency and lower operating costs. ABB will also supply the associated heat recovery steam generators, two steam turbines, the electricity generators, the overall power plant control system, and the balance of plant equipment. In addition, ABB will supply a 13-kilometer natural gas pipeline to feed fuel to the plant, and a 20 km high-voltage transmission line to connect the plant to the national grid. ABB will also be responsible for the engineering and the complete installation and commissioning work and will operate and maintain the plant for the first 8 years. The power plant will incorporate ABB’s advanced gas turbine technology
The order reinforces ABB’s position as a leading global supplier of high-efficiency, low-emission combined-cycle power generation systems. The power plant in Hai-Fu follows orders for its GT26/24 gas turbines in the U. S., the U.K., Korea, Germany, New Zealand and Argentina. Hai-Fu is also the second recent order for a combined-cycle power plant in Taiwan, following the award, announced in May, 1997, of the 320-megawatt power plant order for Tung Hsiao.
ABB’s Power Generation Segment employs more than 43,000 people worldwide with orders in 1996 of US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 216,000 people with orders in 1996 of US$ 36 billion. (End)
