ABB wins US$ 160-million contracts for Canada power plant

Turnkey 250-megawatt combined-cycle plant to use advanced gas turbine

Zurich, Switzerland, July 2, 1998 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has been awarded a contract to build a 250-megawatt gas-fired combined-cycle cogeneration power plant at Campbell River in British Columbia, Canada. The turnkey contract, together with a multi-year maintenance contract, have a total value of about US$ 160 million. Both contracts are with the Island Cogeneration Project Inc. of Vancouver, B.C., which is owned by Fletcher Challenge Energy Inc., a division of Fletcher Challenge Limited of Auckland, New Zealand, and Westcoast Power Inc., a subsidiary of Vancouver-based Westcoast Energy Inc. Construction of the plant is expected to begin in the third quarter of 1998, with commercial service scheduled to begin in the year 2000.

Under the terms of the contracts, ABB will supply one GT24 advanced gas turbine, the heat recovery steam generator, the electrical generator, steam turbine, overall power plant controls, balance of plant equipment and all civil works. ABB is responsible for all engineering, complete installation and commissioning work. ABB has signed a 12-year maintenance agreement for the plant.
The cogeneration plant - in which heat from the power generation process is used to make steam for industrial applications or as a heating source - will supply steam to the adjacent Fletcher Challenge Canada pulp and paper mill. Electricity from the new plant will be delivered to the local power grid.
The contract strengthens ABB’s position as a supplier of high-efficiency, low-emission combined-cycle power generation systems. ABB has previously won orders for its GT24/GT26 gas turbines in Mexico, the U.S., the U.K., South Korea, Germany, Argentina and New Zealand.
ABB’s global Power Generation Segment employs 43,000 people worldwide with orders in 1997 of over US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 213,000 people with orders in 1997 of about US$ 35 billion. (End)
