ABB wins US$ 600-million contract to build world’s largest cracker in Texas

Turnkey project to produce record quantities of olefins - ethylene and propylene

Zurich, Switzerland, July 28, 1998 - ABB, the international engineering group, has been awarded a lump sum turnkey contract to build a liquids feed steam cracker at FINA’s refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, U.S.A. The contract, with a value of more than US$ 600 million, was placed by an American joint venture of BASF Corporation, Mount Olive, New Jersey, and FINA Inc., Dallas, Texas. The new facility will have a capacity to produce approximately 860,000 metric tons of ethylene and 860,000 metric tons of propylene per annum. Construction is planned to begin later this year and completion is scheduled for the year 2000.

ABB will deliver under a license the process technology as well as provide the engineering, procurement, and the supply of all equipment and material. In addition, ABB is responsible for the construction of the plant and commissioning services at start-up.
When completed, it will be the largest single train olefins facility in the world. New features in the design of the unit provide a higher level of overall efficiency, a significant reduction in capital costs, and enhanced environmental performance.
ABB's global oil, gas and petrochemical business, with orders in 1997 of more than US$ 3 billion, develops and supplies refineries, composite petrochemical plants and offshore installations worldwide. The ABB Group employs approximately 219,000 people with orders in 1997 of about US$ 35 billion. (End)
