ABB wins US$127-million operation & maintenance contract for Argentina power plant

10-year contract to help customer meet demands of deregulated power market

Zurich, Switzerland, September 21, 1998 - ABB, the international engineering company, has signed a 10-year contract to provide operation and maintenance (O&M) services to the Dock Sud power plant it is building in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The US$ 127-million contract was placed by Central Dock Sud S.A., an independent power producer formed by Endesa International, (a company affiliated with the Spanish electrical utility Endesa), Astra (a subsidiary of Repsol, Spain), and a number of Argentinian minority shareholders including Pan American Energy. ABB has the contract to build the 775-megawatt gas-fired combined-cycle power plant and plans to begin the O&M contract once the plant is operational which is expected in August 1999.

The Dock Sud plant is Latin America’s first so-called “merchant” power plant, providing electricity to meet the actual short-term needs of the market rather than under the long-term guaranteed contracts typical of regulated markets. Therefore, performance and availability are key to its competitive success. Under the terms of the O&M contract, ABB will provide operation support and all maintenance of the power plant which is equipped with ABB’s advanced GT26 high-efficiency gas turbines. The daily operation of the plant will be performed by the owner’s personnel. ABB will also guarantee the availability of the power plant equipment and the plant’s performance.
The ABB Group serves customers worldwide in power generation, transmission, and distribution; automation; oil, gas, and petrochemicals; industrial products and contracting; financial services; and rail transportation. The Group reported orders in 1997 of $35 billion and employs about 220,000 people. (End)
