ABB tops sustainability index three years in a row

Dow Jones Sustainability Index an industry benchmark

Zurich, Switzerland, October 11, 2001 – ABB, the global power and automation technology group, said today that it has been ranked number one in corporate sustainability by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), topping the electric components and equipment industry group for the third year in a row.

The number one ranking is the result of research done by the SAM Sustainability Group. SAM’s findings make up part of the DJSI, a widely used benchmark for financial products based on corporate sustainability performance indicators.

“Sustainability is like quality, you just have to have it,” said Jörgen Centerman, ABB president and CEO. “We appreciate this recognition of ABB’s efforts to play a constructive social role as well as helping our utility and industry customers to increase their performance while lowering their environmental impact.”

SAM sees corporate sustainability “as a business approach to create long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks deriving from economic, environmental and social development.”

“The index is a clear and unbiased measure of corporate sustainability in relation to industry peers,” said Ivo Knoepfel, head of Rating and Index Research, SAM Group. “We praise ABB’s integration of information technology, Industrial IT, into products and systems, as well as its efforts in small-scale, decentralized energy and renewables.”

SAM ranked ABB above the industry average and best in its group in corporate governance, social policy and environmental performance. SAM also acknowledged ABB’s new customer-centric structure.

The SAM annual review examines the corporate sustainability performance of the largest 2,500 companies in the Dow Jones Global Index. This year it selected 312 companies for the DJSI World, representing the top ten percent of sustainability companies worldwide.
