ABB awarded part of Chinese petrochemical project by SECCO

BLOOMFIELD, NJ, April 15 -- Shanghai SECCO Petrochemical Company Ltd., a joint venture of BP Chemical, Sinopec and Shanghai Petrochemical Corporation, has selected ABB to provide technology, engineering and procurement services for part of their new US$ 2.7 billion petrochemical complex in Caojing, China. A contract has been signed for a small portion of the engineering and procurement services for a project valued at approximately US$ 350 million, which includes a 900,000 metric ton per year (MTA) naphtha cracker integrated with an olefins conversion unit (OCT) to produce a total of 590,000 MTA propylene. The complex is scheduled for start-up in the first half of 2005.

The integration of the ethylene plant and OCT unit is the third application using metathesis chemistry to partially generate the propylene product from a steam cracker. This approach provides lower energy consumption and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The SECCO project marks the first application of this technology in China.

Mr. Stephen Solomon, president of ABB Lummus Global, states: "This project -- involving two strategic customers, Sinopec and BP -- takes another major step in our participation in China's petrochemical industry, where we have been present for nearly 30 years."

The ethylene and OCT units are based on proprietary technologies provided by ABB Lummus Global.

The engineering and procurement services will involve partnerships of ABB Lummus Global with Sinopec Engineering (SEI).
