ABB optimizes power supply in Italy

Major order for the supply of phase-shifting transformers

Zurich, Switzerland, April 29, 2002 - The Italian transmission company TERNA, a company of the ENEL group, awarded ABB to supply two phase-shifting transformers and to integrate them into the existing station control system. The order is worth over 18 million Euro. The transformers will be used to optimize the transmission of energy from France to Italy, which depends on electricity imports to cover its power requirements. The uneven utilization of power lines in the European network system has so far meant that the transmission capacity cannot be fully utilized. Using phase-shifting transformers increases the transmission capacity of the existing power lines, thus enabling major costs savings to be made.

ABB will be responsible from development and construction of the transformers to integration into the existing supply network. "This is an example of how transmission congestion can be alleviated by integrating advanced capability products into an existing system," said Peter Smits, Member of ABB's Group Executive Committee and Head of Power Technology Products division. "Our solution will benefit the customer through increased flexibility and capacity of this important transmission corridor."

Phase-shifting transformers are used to control energy flows in transmission networks and to balance out overloads and underloads. The two phase-shifting transformers are amongst the largest products of this type that ABB has ever supplied: They will each have a throughput rating of 1,630 MVA at the 400 kV level. Each transformer weighs around 780 tonnes. ABB's experience with phase-shifting transformers dates back to the 1960s. As a Center of Excellence within ABB, the plant in Bad Honnef, Germany, is the focus for competence in the design, construction and use of these special transformers.

ABB is a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. ABB has some 155,000 employees in more than 100 countries.
