ABB wins US$ 37 million order for Romanian substation

Equipment will modernize key connection in country’s power network

Zürich, Switzerland, May 29, 2002 – ABB, the global power and automation technology group, said today it has won a US$ 37 million contract in Romania to engineer and build a high-voltage substation to transmit power from Slatina, in the southern part of Romania, to consumers 250 kilometers to the east in Bucharest, and nearby Alro, the country’s largest aluminum smelter.

The contract, signed with the state-owned Power Grid Company, Transelectrica S.A., is to replace an aging substation currently operating in Slatina.

“A crucial requirement of the project is to ensure minimal interruption of power during the construction period,” said Richard Siudek, executive vice president and head of ABB’s Utilities division. “ABB will accomplish this by incrementally replacing existing equipment with more compact equipment within the existing footprint.”

The scope of the project includes all high-voltage equipment; two large power transformers, associated switchyard equipment and computerized protection and control equipment. ABB is also responsible for all electrical and mechanical design, civil work, erection and commissioning. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2005.

This is ABB’s third major substation order in Romania in the past 12 months. In July 2001 ABB won a US$ 17 million order from Power Grid Company Transelectrica S.A., to rehabilitate the 400KV/110 KV substation Constanta North. In December 2001 ABB won a US$ 19 million order from SC Electrica S.A. to install six 110/20 kV substations to reinforce the 110 kV distribution network at locations throughout the country.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. ABB has 152,000 employees in more than 100 countries.
