Georgia Gulf Corporation chooses ABB Industrial IT

June 5, 2002. ABB will provide Industrial IT automation solutions for the Georgia Gulf Corporation PVC complex in Plaquemine, LA, USA.

The Plaquemine complex produces high-grade PVC, and this project involves the replacement of the existing system which was installed in 1976. The new system will contain 4300 I/O points to control and monitor the process.

ABB’s IndustrialIT delivery for Georgia Gulf includes eight OperateIT operator stations, 23 redundant ControlIT AC800M controllers, S800 I/O modules and ProduceIT batch management software. ABB will also provide application engineering services, training, and site services which include demolition, installation, start-up and commissioning services for a complete, turn-key scope of supply.

"Georgia Gulf has experience with ABB DCS control systems in their Aberdeen, MS and Oklahoma City, OK plants,” says Ben Drone, GGC Project Manager at Georgia Gulf. “The ABB IndustrialIT solution provided the least amount of production downtime while providing all the expanded capabilities required," continued Drone.

This is the largest IndustrialIT system scheduled for delivery in the U.S. in 2002. The size of this project and the tight delivery schedule demonstrates Georgia Gulf's confidence in ABB’s technology and ability to deliver on time. Georgia Gulf expects to achieve significant increases in operating efficiency and reduced maintenance costs by upgrading to IndustrialIT.

ABB's ability to provide a complete, turn-key retrofit was an important consideration in the award. ABB performed a detailed Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study in preparation for the project to allow Georgia Gulf to identify the project scope, schedule and cost. Based on the front end work and ABB's familiarity with the site and the project, ABB will be able to meet the aggressive schedule. The project will be complete and in commissioning by the end of 2002.
