ABB wins US$ 14 million underground cable system contract in Spain

2002-06-06 - Madrid, May 20, 2002 - ABB, the global power and automation technology group, has won a US$ 14 million order to install a 13-kilometers long 400-kilovolt underground cable system. The contract was awarded by REE (Red Eléctrica de Espana) in the course of the extension of Madrid's International Airport Barajas. The project is scheduled for completion in October 2003, whereas all components will be supplied already by the end of this year.

During a visit on a customer's site in Berlin, REE used the opportunity to get an idea of ABB's outstanding experience in the design, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of similarly sized projects. Besides its Berlin based customer, ABB also supplied electric utilities in Taiwan, London, Abu Dhabi and China with comparable extra high-voltage (EHV) cable systems.

The project

AENA, the Spanish airport authority is extending the international Airport Barajas, Madrid.

The extension includes the construction of two new runways. As the existing 400 kV overhead transmission lines operated by REE would obstruct incoming planes, they will have to be dismantled and installed anew in a tunnel under the new runways.

ABB will manufacture and install 39 km of 400 kV XLPE insulated power cables (three single core cables of 13 km and a conductor cross-section of 2,500 mm2 each) plus all required cable accessories like cross bonding joints, cable terminations, current transformers and lightning arrestors.

The challenge

The transmission lines, owned by the main Transmission System Operator of Spain, form part of the main power supply ring of the city of Madrid. Hence, the grid's stability and the large transmission capacity of the affected power cables are of highest importance for this project.

Therefore, the realization of this 13-kilometer underground cable route is a highly demanding tasks for any cable manufacturer.

REE's latest order once again validates ABB's expertise and capability as one of the world's leading manufacturers of extra high-voltage XLPE insulated power cable systems. ABB owes its market leadership to its experience and know-how in the field of cable systems up to 550 kV which were successfully supplied and commissioned during the last years.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. ABB has 152,000 employees in more than 100 countries.
