ABB is awarded US$ 250-million contract for nuclear fuel for U.S.A.

Zurich, Switzerland, December 10, 1996 - ABB, the International electrical engineering company, has signed a contract with the Arizona Public Service Company, U.S.A., to supply nuclear fuel and related services for Units 1, 2 and 3 of the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, located near Phoenix, Arizona. The order is valued at over US$ 250 million and extends ABB's current fuel supply contract with this customer by a further 20 years to the year 2116. The nuclear fuel assemblies will be fabricated in ABB's nuclear fuel production facilities in the U.S. The first fuel batches produced under the new agreement will be delivered to the power plant in August 1997.

ABB has been the sole fuel supplier for Palo Verdes three 1270-megawatt (MWe) pressurized water reactors (PWR). These were originally supplied by Combustion Engineering whom ABB acquired in 1989. Units 1 and 2 began commercial operation in 1986, and Unit 3 in 1988. Each unit operates over 18-month reactor cycles using ABB's 16 x 16 fuel assemblies - a robust and proven design capable of supporting operating cycles of up to 24 months.

The award is the fourth major nuclear fuel contract that ABB has received this year for PWR power plants. The three earlier orders were from Florida Power & Light Company, U.S.A., for the long-term supply of fuel for their St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant, from Baltimore Gas & Electric Company, U.S.A., who extended their existing contract with ABB for the supply of fuel and related services for their Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant and from Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) for Units 3 and 4 of their Yonggwang Nuclear Power Plant.

The contracts were won by ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Operations, Windsor, Connecticut, U.S.A., a member of ABB's global Power Generation segment which employs more than 46,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of over US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 217,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of over US$ 36 billion.
