ABB wins 500-kilovolt power line contract for the Philippines

ABB to construct 170 km of power transmission lines to provide backbone connections for the new Luzon grid

Zurich, Switzerland, November 13, 1996 - ABB, the International electrical engineering company, has won an order valued at nearly US¤ 90 million to supply and construct two overhead 500-kilovolt power transmission lines in the Philippines. The lines will connect Labrador to San Manuel and San Manuel to San José, a total distance of 170 km, on the main island of Luzon. the contract was placed by National power Corporation (Napocor), the Philippines' state-owned power utility, with financing provided by the World Bank. Construction work is to commence immediately and the new lines are scheduled to be available for service by the spring of 1998.

These two high-voltage interconnections will form an important part of the new electricity transmission grid currently under construction in Luzon. In particular, they will distribute the energy from large new base-load power plants to be built in the area. ABB will have turnkey responsibility covering all aspects of the project, including engineering design, fabrication of the steel lattice towers, supply of the power line materials and construction of the lines, including stringing and testing.

These new power lines will make an important contribution to support the fast-growing economic development of the region. Strengthening the Luzon grid will help improve the reliability of electricity supplies in the area, thereby underpinning investment programs and employment opportunities.

The order was won by ABB SAE Sadelmi in Milan, Italy, who is presently involved in the construction of two other major power lines for the same customer in the Philippines. The first is a 350-kilovolt high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power line to connect a geothermal power plant on the island of Leyte to southern Luzon, a distance of 450 km. The second is a 500-kilovolt conventional alternating current (AC) line between Tayabas and Dasmarinas, a distance of 100 km.

ABB's Power Transmission & Distribution segment employs nearly 47,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of nearly US$ 9 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 217,000 people with orders in 1995 of over US$ 36 billion
