ABB acquires U.K.'s leading manufacturer of electricity meters

Acquisition of GEC Meters enhances ABBs position as one of the worlds leading suppliers of complete residential and industrial electricity metering applications

Zurich, Switzerland, November 11, 1996 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, today announced its acquisition of GEC Meters, the U.K.s largest manufacturer of electricity meters for residential and industrial applications, from The General Electric Company, p.l.c., the U.K. electronics and electrical engineering group. GEC Meters, based at Stone, north of Birmingham, employs approximately 700 people with annual revenues of US$ 48 million.

GEC Meters designs and manufactures electricity meters for the U.K., European and other international markets, where its products complement ABBs existing world-leading Alpha electronic metering technology and electromechanical meters and metering systems. The acquisition forms part of ABBs global strategy to supply complete solutions across the full scope of residential and industrial metering applications and will establish ABB as one of the worlds top three suppliers in this field with a network of manufacturing and sales operations worldwide.

GEC Meters will be renamed ABB Metering Systems Ltd and will be part of ABBs global Power Transmission and Distribution segment. From its current premises in Stone it will become one of ABBs centers of excellence for the design, manufacture and marketing of electricity metering systems.

ABB employs 13,000 people in the U.K. with revenues in 1995 of US$ 1.7 billion. ABBs Power Transmision & Distribution segment employs nearly 47,000 people wordwide with orders in 1995 of nearly US$ 9 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 217,000 people with orders in 1995 of over US$ 36 billion. (End)
