ABB receives US$ 270-million power plant extension order in the U.K.

ABB to build 510-megawatt extension to combined-cycle power plant at South Humber Bank for an independent power producer (IPP)

Zurich, Switzerland, November 26, 1996 - ABB, the International electrical engineering company, has received a turnkey contract valued at over US$ 270 million to extend the U.K.'s South Humber Bank power station with an additional 510-megawatt combined-cycle plant. The order was placed by independent power producer Humber Power Ltd, U.K., which is co-owned by several partners including ABB. Construction work at the plant, situated on the Humber River estuary south of Grimsby, will commence at the beginning of 1997. The plant is scheduled to be in commercial operation by the end of 1998 and will be operated by IVO Generation Services, one of the IPP partners.

As turnkey supplier with overall project responsibility, ABB will supply two type GT13 E2 gas turbines, the associated heat recovery steam generators, one steam turbine, the electrical generators, the overall power plant control system and all auxiliary systems. ABB is also responsible for the overall design, engineering and project management. The power plant will incorporate ABB's advanced combined-cycle technology with low-NOx burners, which achieve high fuel efficiency, low emissions and reduced operating costs.

In 1994, ABB was awarded the contract to build phase one of the South Humber Bank combined-cycle plant which included the delivery of three type GT13E2 gas turbines, as well as overall project responsibility. This first phase of the power plant, providing an output of 750 megawatts, is scheduled to come into commercial operation at the beginning of 1997. On completion of the second phase, South Humber Bank power plant, with a total output of 1260 megawatts, will add substantial, environmentally-friendly, efficient and reliable generating capacity to meet the residential and industrial power needs of northeast England.

The contract is led by ABB Power Generation, Switzerland, a member of ABB's global Power Generation segment which employs more than 46,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of over US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 217,000 people with orders in 1995 of over US$ 36 billion.
