ABB is awarded US$ 200-million contracts to equip nuclear power plants in South Korea

Zurich, Switzerland, November 25, 1996 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has signed contracts valued at approximately US$ 200 million with the Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO), the state-owned electrical utility. The contracts are to deliver nuclear reactor equipment to Units 5 and 6 of Ulchin Nuclear Power Plant, situated in Kyongbuk province on South Korea's east coast.

Under the terms of the contracts, ABB will provide engineering design and components for two 1,000-megawatt (MWe) light water nuclear steam supply systems based on an advanced version of its proven System 80 design - among the worlds safest and most reliable nuclear systems. The two power plant units are scheduled to go into operation in February 2003 and 2004, respectively.

These awards demonstrate the further consolidation of South Korea's standardization program for nuclear power plant construction and the successful cooperation between KEPCO and ABB in the transfer of technology. Additional updates to enhance plant safety and to facilitate maintenance have been built into the standard design for these latest units.

In addition to this order, ABB and KEPCO have collaborated in the construction of six other similar nuclear power plants for the country's electricity supply grid. Units 3 and 4 at Yonggwang Nuclear Power Plant, situated in Chonnam province on South Korea's west coast, began commercial operation in March 1995 and January 1996, respectively. Two additional units are also under construction at each of the Yonggwang and Ulchin sites.

The contracts were won by ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Systems, Windsor, Connecticut, USA, a member of ABB's global Power Generation segment which employs more than 46,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of over US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs approximately 217,000 people worldwide with orders in 1995 of over US$ 36 billion.
