ABB invests in new high-tech semiconductor plant in Switzerland

US$ 70-million investment and 200 new jobs to manufacture next generation semiconductors and power devices for high-tech, high-power applications.

Zurich, Switzerland, March 5, 1997 - ABB, the international engineering company, is to build a factory in Switzerland to manufacture high-tech, high-power BiMOS semiconductors. The Group will invest over US$ 70 million in the new factory, to be built alongside the existing bipolar semiconductor plant in Lenzburg, near Baden. The new plant will employ about 200 people. This investment will enable ABB to push development in this highly specialized field and maintain its position as a leading supplier on the world market of high-power devices and semiconductors.

This new BiMOS manufacturing facility, scheduled for completion by autumn 1998, will produce ABB's latest generation of Insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) high-power modules. These devices are used in advanced high-power electronics, switching power ratings above 600 kilowatts several hundred times per second continuously. They provide much higher performance and greater reliability over the full product lifetime, which may span several decades. Applications include railway locomotives, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission systems, power system control equipment and industrial drives. Its location alongside the existing plant and near to the ABB Corporate Research Centre in Dättwil will bring the new factory benefits from synergies in quality enhancement, application engineering, sales and administration.

Göran Lindahl, President and CEO of the ABB Group, said in a related statement: "This is what Switzerland is uniquely good at, utilizing its resources of highly-trained technical personnel to establish a leading position in high-tech, process-oriented operations. The new plant demonstrates the importance of Switzerland as a centre for advanced research and development and high-tech production facilities for the ABB Group."

ABB Switzerland employs approximately 10,500 people in 26 companies. The ABB Group employs approximately 215,000 people worldwide with orders in 1996 of over US$ 36 billiion.
