ABB receives major order for HVDC power link between Sweden and Poland

US$ 260 million ‘SwePol Link’ order for a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable link to smooth power demands in the Baltic Sea region.

Zurich, Switzerland, July 24, 1997 - ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has received an order to supply a 600-megawatt (MW) high-voltage direct current submarine power transmission system, named the ‘SwePol Link’, to interconnect the power networks of Sweden and Poland. The order, valued at approximately US$ 260 million, was placed by SwePol Link AB, Stockholm, the company created to operate the link. SwePol Link AB is part-owned by Svenska Kraftnät, the Swedish state power grid operator, by Vattenfall, Sweden’s state-owned major power generator, and by PPGC, the Polish state-owned power grid company. The 230 km link is planned to run under the Baltic Sea from Sweden’s south coast to Poland. The SwePol Link will operate at 450 kilovolts DC and is scheduled to come into operation towards the end of 1999.

ABB will supply the submarine high-voltage direct current cable as well as the converter station equipment at both ends of the link which make the conversion between the alternating current systems of the power grids in both countries and the direct current system of the submarine cable link. ABB is a world leader in this specialized technology and has been awarded HVDC contracts during the last five years in Europe and Asia totalling nearly 7,000 MW.

The SwePol Link will provide a further step towards the integration of the power systems of the Baltic Sea countries. This will permit the exchange of power across borders to smooth differing electricity demands in the countries concerned and to utilise the overall power generation capacity of the region more efficiently.

The order was won by Swedish members of ABB’s Power Transmission and Distribution Segment which employs 51,000 people worldwide with orders in 1996 of approximately US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs 215,000 people worldwide with orders in 1996 of over US$ 36 billion. (End)
