ABB renews long-term nuclear fuel contract with U.S. utility

ABB, the international electrical engineering company, has won a long-term contract to supply a U.S. utility with nuclear fuel fabrication and related services. The order from Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. (BG&E) extends ABB’s current fuel supply contract with the utility from 1999 to 2013. The contract, valued at more than $90 million, covers BG&E’s Calvert Cliffs plant, Units 1 and 2, in Lusby, Maryland. The extended contract will satisfy BG&E’s fuel fabrication needs through the end of Calvert Cliffs’ current operating license.

ABB’s advanced fuel system design offers a variety of features to improve a plant’s overall fuel economy. The nuclear fuel assemblies for both units will be manufactured at ABB facilities in the U.S.

The order was won by ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Operations of the U.S. The company is a member of ABB’s global Power Generation segment, which employs more than 46,000 people worldwide with orders in 1996 of more than US$ 10 billion. The ABB Group employs 215,000 people in more than 100 countries around the world and recorded orders in 1996 of over US$ 36 billion. (END)
