ABB launches professional HV generators for mid-range gensets

2014-06-30 - ABB is expanding its offering for engine and genset manufacturers with HV (high voltage) generators covering powers up to 4.8 MVA. Delivering the same high reliability and low cost of ownership as ABB’s proven high power generators, the new standard products are compact in size and easy to install. ABB’s globally identical manufacturing processes ensure high quality and short delivery times, no matter where the customer is located.

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is launching new high voltage synchronous generators in frame size 560. Covering the power range 1.6 to 4.8 MVA at voltages from 3.3 to 13.8 kV, the new generators incorporate a number of professional features designed to meet the specific needs of the mid-range market segment.

Gensets often have to cope with changing and non-linear loads, and the new generators meet these challenges with an innovative built-in PMG (permanent magnet generator) excitation unit. Professional PMG excitation comes as standard and provides excellent short-circuit, overload and motor starting capabilities. The generators also feature a rigid, salient pole rotor construction for reliable operation even under very demanding load conditions.

The new design features a high degree of integration, which makes the generators compact and easy to install, and helps to save installation time and cost. The terminal unit is integrated into the top of the generator and accommodates the main and auxiliary terminals and the AVR (automatic voltage regulator). There is ample space for easy installation of cables, transformers and the AVR itself.

Available options include ABB’s cutting-edge digital AVR, which not only offers power factor regulation, voltage matching and limiters, but also eliminates the need for external synchronization or diode monitoring units. This extra built-in functionality saves on space, cabling and installation work.

“Three ABB engineering teams around the world worked together on the design of the new generators,” says Gaetano Sivo, product manager for compact stationary engines at ABB. “They used advanced methods like FEM (finite element method) simulation and CFD (computational fluid dynamics) to ensure that genset manufacturers will be able to create rigid, predictable genset designs with excellent vibration durability. We have a global manufacturing footprint with identical production processes at all our plants, ensuring consistent high quality. For our customers this means short delivery times and local engineering support, and it also gives them the opportunity to optimize their sourcing and logistics.”

“As the global technology leader in motors and generators, we aim to utilize our know-how and experience to help our customers achieve even better performance. We are a well-established supplier of generators for the biggest gensets, meeting the most demanding manufacturing standards, and with this new standard product family we are bringing our experience and technology to the 1.6 - 4.8 MVA power range.”

ABB ( is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 150,000 people.
