ABB expands $35 million contract to maintain Mexico’s power control systems

2004-08-09 - One of largest service contracts for SCADA maintenance ever awarded

Zurich, Switzerland, August 9, 2004 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it will add two sub-area control centers to its Network Manager™ SCADA/EMS power control system that it has installed throughout Mexico at Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), the country’s national power grid operator.

The two sub-area control centers, at Durango and Sureste, will be integrated into ABB’s “evergreen” service model, introduced under a contract signed in November 2003.

“ABB has the products and technical solutions to optimize the installed base of our power customers,” said Peter Smits, head of ABB's Power Technologies division. “Our global technology and strong local presence means we are a reliable service partner.” The evergreen contract, valued at $35 million, was one of the largest of its kind ever signed.

The maintenance contract includes hardware replacement and expansion, system and software updates, remote diagnostic capability and round-the-clock service support. ABB personnel will also carry out periodic on-site visits to audit the systems and recommend preventive and corrective maintenance.

The CFE installation is made up of many individual systems hierarchically configured in three levels: a national control center (with a fully redundant backup site), area controls centers, and sub-area control centers like Durango and Sureste.
