Helping supply an offshore oil field

2015-03-06 - ABB will supply modularized electrical houses to facilitiate power supply to an offshore oil field off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Satah al-Razboot offshore oil field – located about 200 kilometers northwest of Abu Dhabi in the UAE – is being developed by Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO), a major producer of oil and gas from the emirate’s offshore areas. Work on the field involves the construction of two artificial islands to facilitate drilling works for the extraction of crude oil.

Drilled oil will be transferred via a subsea pipeline to a new facility to be built on Zirku Island, in the Persian Gulf, for processing, storage and export. Hyundai Engineering & Construction is a major engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contractor for the project.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction has entrusted ABB with providing modularized electrical houses (e-houses) for the project. The facility is not connected to the grid and power will be supplied by five gas turbine generators connected to ABB’s e-houses.

The e-house units will be equipped with ZX2 gas-insulated medium-voltage switchgear and UniGear ZS1 medium-voltage switchgear, as well as low-voltage switchgear, motor control centers, variable-frequency drives and an Electrical Control Monitoring System (ECMS).

A modularized e-house is a prefabricated walk-in outdoor enclosure to house medium-voltage and low-voltage switchgear as well as auxiliary equipment. This solution reduces on-site installation and maintenance work, a particular benefit in remote areas such as offshore oil fields.
