ABB’s advanced REACT storage inverter powers and manages the smart home

Valdarno / Munich, June 17, 2016 - The REACT storage inverter enables the connected home through home energy management systems and storage capabilities.

The modern smart home is filled with intelligent devices, collectively operating together via the Internet of Things to facilitate the lives of consumers. ABB’s REACT storage inverter further enables the connected home concept with its advanced home energy management and storage systems.

The REACT is a highly sophisticated, feature-rich single-phase inverter rated 3.6 kW and 4.6 kW, and sports a modular Lithium-Ion battery system expandable from 2-6 kWh. It has double maximum power point tracking (2 MPPT) inputs for high solar generating efficiency, 4 integrated load manager outputs to operate appliances, and 1 backup power auxiliary output in case of black-outs.

The REACT enables the smart home in two main ways. For complete smart home integration, the REACT works seamlessly with ABB’s Free@Home home automation system to autonomously power and manage lighting, heating, air-conditioning, security systems and many other home devices through a wall-mounted control, any smart device or web browser. All connected smart devices can be setup to have pre-configured “scenes” that instantly and dramatically change the look and feel of a room.

For simpler applications, the REACT’s integrated load management outputs can be programmed to power 4 different devices through an algorithm that allows operation during specific time frames or if there is excess solar power generated. Through these efficient energy strategy programs, up to 25% extra self-consumption over a standard PV inverter is possible. In the event of a black-out, the auxiliary backup output provides further ease of mind to the consumer by allowing up to 3kW of power generated via the PV panels or through the stored energy.

These smart home features are enabled through the integrated Wi-Fi data logger in the REACT, which contains a web server. Allowing access via the MyReact app for smart devices or any web browser, consumers can control and monitor the REACT and its load managers. For solar installers, the device is highly installer-friendly with a compact form factor and offers easy wireless commissioning.

With the REACT’s modular 2-6 kWh Li-Ion battery, excess solar energy can be stored and used later, reducing consumers’ energy bills by lowering grid reliance during periods of peak demand where there are typically higher electricity tariff rates. This greatly increases the self-sufficiency and self-consumption for consumers seeking to power their homes in an economical and sustainable manner.
