ABB sets new standards with the IRB 4600

Fourth-generation multi-purpose robots feature ABB’s new sharp technology

Västerås – November 11 – Today, ABB, the leading supplier of industrial robots, is introducing the fastest, most accurate, low-weight, medium-size robot ever.

The new IRB 4600 features a new compact and lightweight design with an upper arm of aluminum and spur gears of ABB’s own design. The robot incorporates QuickMove and TrueMove, ABB’s breakthrough sharp motion technology that defines precise performance and path accuracy with the shortest possible rapid cycle time.

The IRB 4600 comes in four versions: two short-arm versions (2.05 m) for 60 or 45 kg payload and two long-arm (2.50 & 2.55 m) versions for 40 or 20 kg. The new robot features an ultra-wide working range, minimal cycle times and state-of-the-art path performance. It can be mounted on the floor, shelf, tilted and even inverted. Thanks to its semi-shelf capability, it also has a very good reach below the base of the robot, the widest vertical reach on the market in its class, and can be placed on top of the machines.

“I think everyone is looking for the most efficient solution to get ahead in their market. In this, your primary focus is on performance, quality and lifetime cost – which are all synonymous with ABB robots. The IRB 4600 happens to be the most efficient robot on the market. If you are looking for a sharp robot with the best performance, the IRB 4600 is simply the best choice. You cannot find anything similar on the market,” says Gustaf Flodström, Project Manager, ABB.

With a weight of just above 400 kilos, this is the lightest general-purpose robot ever offered on the market. The new design without a parallel rod gives a wider working range and the compact body will fit into the user’s workshops, taking up less floor space than any other robot in its class. The IRB 4600 is designed to withstand harsh environments; all robots are protected according to the IP 67 standard.

ABB is the leading supplier of industrial robots and also provides the industry with robot software, peripheral equipment, modular manufacturing cells and service for tasks such as welding, handling, assembly, painting and finishing, picking, packing, palletizing and machine tending. Key markets include the automotive, plastics, metal fabrication, foundry, electronics, machine tools, pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries. A strong focus on solutions helps manufacturers improve productivity, quality and worker safety. To date, more than 160,000 ABB robots have been installed worldwide.
