ABB technology wins energy efficiency award

2008-03-04 - An ABB technology that helps cement makers reduce their energy consumption by controlling a range of processes in their plants was picked as the “most innovative technology for electrical energy efficiency” at a global conference for the cement industry in London.

By ABB Communications

ABB’s Expert Optimizer software was selected by judges from Global Cement and Global Fuels magazines at the event in early February. Cement is one of the most energy intensive industries, accounting for about 4 percent of global CO2 emissions, and ABB’s technology can reduce the energy consumption of cement plants by about 5 percent.

“We are truly honored that ABB has been recognized with this award,” said Eduardo Gallestey, product manager for Expert Optimizer at ABB, who collected the award at the conference. “It is great to see that ABB’s commitment to innovation, and our focus on improving productivity and energy efficiency, has been acknowledged by the opinion leaders in the market. I was very proud to accept the trophy on behalf of our team.”

Alternative fuels and energy efficiency
The award was one of four made at the Global Fuels conference, an annual event that focuses on alternative fuel options for the cement and lime industries and on electrical energy efficiency measures. The other prizes were for “Outstanding alternative fuel project,” “Most innovative technology for alternative fuel use,” and “Global fuels personality of the year.”

More than 100 cement industry delegates from 27 countries attended the event.

Expert Optimizer allows cement plants to reduce energy consumption by optimizing equipment used in the cement production such as mills, kilns and coolers, and implementing optimal schedules for the most efficient use of assets such as the grinding plant. Monitoring of energy consumption is carried out by the system in conjunction with ABB’s Knowledge Manager solution.

Expert Optimizer and Knowledge Manager are part of ABB's Collaborative Production Management (www.abb.com/cpm) suite of products, which provide productivity improvements to process automation companies.

Proven technology
Expert Optimizer has helped increase production and lower energy consumption for customer facilities around the world including Cement Australia’s Gladstone Works and a Holcim plant in Ternate, Italy (see story links in the right-hand menu).

ABB is a leading global supplier of knowledge-based solutions for the cement and minerals industries, with more than 400 industry-specific installations, thousands of users and millions of hours online process optimization experience.
